All About Steve

In the middle of a trailer park located in Gary, Indiana, there lives a guy named Steve. He and I met only three days ago, yet I cannot get him out of my mind. You see, Steve is a guy who opened a door to three young adults holding a box. Inside the box, he'd soon find a Christmas dinner.
But deeper in this box, he'd find a door.
An opportunity.
A light of hope for his life.
A sign of love from three persons to one.

For a guy who, the day before, had his van towed, had a very rough year with jobs, and has lost or lost relationship with most of his family members, Steve had given up on Christmas this year.

That was until he heard a knock on his door.

His smile, hardly filled with stained crooked teeth, seemed to be one of the warmest I'd ever seen. It radiated with true joy and hope for the renewed holiday season. He bursts with excitement for seeing such generous "kids" as he called us. He promises to attend this church with such a grateful and hopeful God. He looks forward. We leave with handshakes, hugs, and smiles. The giving of a box. The receiving of hope. The feeling of joy within us all.

Merry Christmas, Steve!
